 オレゴン州ポートランドを拠点に活動するリッチモンド・フォンテーンにとって9枚目となるスタジオ・アルバムです。『The Motel Life』や『The Free』など小説家としても注目を集めるフロントマンのウィリー・ヴラウティンは、現代アメリカ西部の周縁に生きる人びととその世界をリアルに描き出してきました。

 この『We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River』は、ヴラウティンの母親の死が出発点になり、そこから生まれた言葉がモチーフになっているため、個人的な体験や心情が色濃く反映された作品になっています。
